Bismillāhir-Raḥmānir-Raḥīm
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
وَالْفَجْرِ
Wal-fajr
By the dawn
وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍ
Wa layālin ‘ashr
And [by] ten nights
وَالشَّفْعِ وَالْوَتْرِ
Wash-shaf‘i wal-watr
And [by] the even [number] and the odd
وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَسْرِ
Wal-layli idhā yasr
And [by] the night when it passes
هَلْ فِي ذَٰلِكَ قَسَمٌ لِّذِي حِجْرٍ
Hal fī dhālika qasamun lidhī ḥijr
Is there [not] in all that an oath [sufficient] for one of perception?
أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِعَادٍ
Alam tara kayfa fa‘ala rabbuka bi-‘Ād
Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with ‘Ād –
إِرَمَ ذَاتِ الْعِمَادِ
Iram dhaatil-‘imād
[With] Iram – who had lofty pillars,
الَّتِي لَمْ يُخْلَقْ مِثْلُهَا فِي الْبِلَادِ
Allatī lam yukhlaq mithluhā fil-bilād
The likes of whom had never been created in the land?
وَثَمُودَ الَّذِينَ جَابُوا الصَّخْرَ بِالْوَادِ
Wa Thamūda alladhīna jābūs-sakhra bil-wād
And [with] Thamud, who carved out the rocks in the valley?
وَفِرْعَوْنَ ذِي الْأَوْتَادِ
Wa Fir‘awna dhīl-awtād
And [with] Pharaoh, owner of the stakes?
الَّذِينَ طَغَوْا فِي الْبِلَادِ
Alladhīna taghaw fil-bilād
[All of] whom transgressed in the lands
فَأَكْثَرُوا فِيهَا الْفَسَادَ
Fa aktharū fīhal-fasād
And increased therein the corruption.
فَصَبَّ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّكَ سَوْطَ عَذَابٍ
Fa ṣabba ‘alayhim rabbuka sawṭa ‘adhāb
So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment.
إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَبِالْمِرْصَادِ
Inna rabbaka lab-il-mirṣād
Indeed, your Lord is in observation.
فَأَمَّا الْإِنسَانُ إِذَا مَا ابْتَلَاهُ رَبُّهُ فَأَكْرَمَهُ وَنَعَّمَهُ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّي أَكْرَمَنِ
Fa-ammal-insānu idhā mā ibtalāhu rabbuhu fa akramahu wa na‘amahu fayaqūlu rabbī akraman
And as for man, when his Lord tries him and [thus] is generous to him and favors him, he says, “My Lord has honored me.”
وَأَمَّا إِذَا مَا ابْتَلَاهُ فَقَدَرَ عَلَيْهِ رِزْقَهُ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّي أَهَانَنِ
Wa ammā idhā mā ibtalāhu faqadara ‘alayhi rizqahu fayaqūlu rabbī ahānan
But when He tries him and restricts his provision, he says, “My Lord has humiliated me.”
كَلَّا بَل لَّا تُكْرِمُونَ الْيَتِيمَ
Kallā bal lā tukrimūnal-yatīm
No! But you do not honor the orphan
وَلَا تَحَاضُّونَ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ الْمِسْكِينِ
Walā taḥāḍḍūna ‘alā ṭa‘āmil-miskīn
And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor.
وَتَأْكُلُونَ التُّرَاثَ أَكْلًا لَّمًّا
Wa ta’kulūnat-turātha aklan lammā
And you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether,
وَتُحِبُّونَ الْمَالَ حُبًّا جَمًّا
Wa tuḥibbūnal-māla ḥubban jammā
And you love wealth with immense love.
كَلَّا إِذَا دُكَّتِ الْأَرْضُ دَكًّا دَكًّا
Kallā idhā dukkatil-arḍu dakkan dakkā
No! When the earth has been leveled – pounded and crushed –
وَجَاءَ رَبُّكَ وَالْمَلَكُ صَفًّا صَفًّا
Wa jā’a rabbuka wal-malaku saffan saffā
And your Lord has come and the angels, rank upon rank,
وَجِيءَ يَوْمَئِذٍ بِجَهَنَّمَ ۚ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَتَذَكَّرُ الْإِنسَانُ وَأَنَّىٰ لَهُ الذِّكْرَىٰ
Wa jī’a yawma’idhin bijahannam; yawma’idhin yatadhakkarul-insānu wa annā lahu dh-dhikrā
And brought within view, that Day, is Hell – that Day, man will remember, but what good to him will be the remembrance?
يَقُولُ يَا لَيْتَنِي قَدَّمْتُ لِحَيَاتِي
Yaqūlu yā laytanī qaddamtu liḥayātī
He will say, “Oh, I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life.”
فَيَوْمَئِذٍ لَّا يُعَذِّبُ عَذَابَهُ أَحَدٌ
Fa yawma’idhin lā yu‘adhdhibu ‘adhābahu aḥad
So on that Day, none will punish [as severely] as His punishment,
وَلَا يُوثِقُ وَثَاقَهُ أَحَدٌ
Walā yūthiqu wathāqahu aḥad
And none will bind [as severely] as His binding [of the evildoers].
يَا أَيَّتُهَا النَّفْسُ الْمُطْمَئِنَّةُ
Yā ayyatuha an-nafsul-muṭma’innah
[To the righteous it will be said], “O reassured soul,
ارْجِعِي إِلَىٰ رَبِّكِ رَاضِيَةً مَّرْضِيَّةً
Irji‘ī ilā rabbiki rāḍiyatan marḍiyyah
Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him],
فَادْخُلِي فِي عِبَادِي
Fadkhulī fī ‘ibādī
And enter among My [righteous] servants
وَادْخُلِي جَنَّتِي
Wadkhulī jannatī
And enter My Paradise.”
